MISSION HILLS, KS. – As part of its ongoing series of philanthropic performances, First Lutheran Church presents an evening with the award-winning sketch comedy of Right Between the Ears on Saturday, April 24, 2010. Proceeds from the show, titled “LOL for SOS,” will benefit the Street Outreach Services (SOS) of Synergy Services.

Right Between the Ears is an award-winning, nationally broadcast radio show that features a high-octane brew of original topical satire and comedy sketches. Spiced with original music and wacky sound effects, RBTE spoofs politicians, pundits, celebrities, professional athletes, TV shows and commercials in live performances and weekly broadcasts.

This event, the fourth in First Lutheran’s eight-performance “Applause for a Cause” series, will be held at 6400 State Line Road, Mission Hills, KS. The program will begin at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be $15 in advance (913-362-4150) and $18 on the day of the show.

“During National Child Abuse Prevention Month, we felt it important to draw attention to youth who are forced into dangerous situations and need safe shelter or other assistance,” said Keith Hohly, pastor of First Lutheran, sponsor of LOL for SOS. “According to Synergy, 43% of homeless youth report being beaten by a caretaker -- 44% report that one or both of their parents at some point received treatment for alcohol, drug or psychological problems -- 40% report being gay and abused in their homes and schools because of their orientation. These are kids who need to escape to safety, but who have no place to go.

“As a congregation, we treasure our role in nurturing the young, ensuring that they are seen, heard, respected and protected. Since 1971, when it became the only shelter for runaway and homeless youth in western Missouri, Synergy has demonstrated a profound commitment to working with teens in crisis. We fully support Synergy’s mission to offer these homeless teens the kindness, consistency, structure, empowerment, support, passion and accountability they need to transform their lives. We share Synergy’s vision of a world without family violence, abuse or neglect.”

Robin Winner, Executive Director of Synergy, added, “On any given night in Greater Kansas City there are 2,000 ‘unattached’ teens living on the streets, sleeping in cars, or ‘couch surfing’ with friends because they do not have a safe place to live. Last year our SOS program served 1,630 youth on the street and distributed close to 20,000 basic care items to them, including food, water, clothing and blankets.

“Here on the front lines of the recession, we see the numbers of Kansas City’s homeless teenagers rising as the challenge of raising funds to provide for them increases. With the opening of our Homeless Youth Campus earlier this year, we are capable of providing expanded services to the growing number of young people in shelter and living on the streets – but we must continually seek partnerships and funding to cover the ongoing costs of those services.”

LAWRENCE - Against all better judgment, the award-winning sketch comedy show Right Between the Ears will take to the airwaves for a live broadcast from the Kansas Public Radio performance studio on Sunday, September 7 .

The show will air live at 7:00pm on KPR stations (KANU, Lawrence; KANH, Emporia ; and KANV, Junction City ). The broadcast is part of Kansas Public Radio's ongoing series of live in-studio performances by area artists. Also, for the first time ever, the show will be available as a live video stream at the RBTE website. The video stream will initiate at 6:45pm Sunday.

For most of its 20+ years on radio, Right Between the Ears aired as a live broadcast. Since 2005, the show has opted instead to simply record performances for later broadcast. “It costs a lot less that way,” said RBTE creator-producer Darrell Brogdon. “Plus it means the cast can stumble in from the bar any time they feel like it, instead of having to start the show at straight up 7 o'clock.”

For the September 7 broadcast, RBTE will present the usual mix of topical take-offs and put-ons, including swipes at the presidential campaign, Senator John Edwards and George W. Bush. Also featured – episodes of Blimp Commandoes and Incompetents Hospital , along with commercials for Testosterettes (the cigarette spiked with male walrus hormones) and Cannabisco (“the snack that gets you high AND cures the munchies”).

Right Between the Ears is a four-time winner of the Gold Medal as Best Comedy Show at the New York Festivals, and recently won two Crystal Awards of Excellence at the 2008 Communicator Awards (for Best Comedy Show and Best Writing). The show airs every Saturday at 7:00pm Central on Sirius Satellite Radio's Laugh Break 105; Saturdays at 6:00pm on KCMO News Talk 710; and Sundays at 7:00pm on the stations of Kansas Public Radio.
